The Fire Within: A Requiem for Katia and Maurice Krafft by Werner Herzog
(France, United Kingdom, Switzerland, United States, 2022)
"Transcendence is a big word and should not be used lightly. But it is also the only possible word that can be applied to the cinematography of Katia and Maurice Krafft. Their images are never just shots of volcanoes, they are also entry points into the complex cycles of the planet, they evoke destruction and recreation on an almost mythical level, they are a constant reminder of humanity's insignificance in the face of the forces of nature, while the strength of their filmmaking bears relentless witness to human capacity and tenacity. Their images transcend their era, they transcend their individual settings, they transcend the lives of their creators that were to be interrupted, they even transcend the very film that contains them. We present the Special Jury Prize to Katia and Maurice Krafft for Best Cinematography for Werner Herzog's The Fire Within: A Requiem for Katia and Maurice Krafft".
