The Atlantic Botanic Garden is a plant museum dedicated to the study, conservation and dissemination of the flora and vegetation of the North Atlantic biomes. It is the oldest botanic garden in Atlantic Spain and stands out for its modern and non-generalist planning, based on specialised collections of plants. Our focus is on the promotion of scientific, educational, tourist and cultural services aimed at the conservation and dissemination of plant and natural heritage.
The Atlantic Botanic Garden offers 19 hectares which are open to visitors. The Garden’s planning took advantage of existing features of the land, incorporating into its collections the historic garden of La Isla and two magnificent natural forests that have survived the urban expansion of the city of Gijón/Xixón: the alder forest of the Peñafrancia river, and El Tragamón oak forest with century-old trees. Botanical collections are complemented by exhibitions in various buildings, including a traditional Asturian farmhouse (the Quintana Rionda), an exhibition pavilion dedicated to Linnaeus, as well as a beautiful children's area (El Bosque del Cuélebre) and a fun laurel maze.

Plan your visit
The Atlantic Botanic Garden is a living museum that offers a different view of nature in each season. To explore the Garden in depth, we recommend taking part in our guided tours included in the ticket price. However, those who prefer to visit at their own pace can follow one of the recommended routes. Furthermore, a visit to the Garden can be combined with a visit to other attractions in the city, such as the Laboral Ciudad de la Cultura and the Aquarium.

The Atlantic Botanic Garden has six main collections. Living plants are organised into four botanical collections, with the Atlantic Ocean as a common theme: the Cantabrian Environment, the Plant Factory, La Isla Garden and the Atlantic Route. In addition, the Garden manages two biodiversity collections: the Germplasm Bank and the JBAG Herbarium.
The Germplasm Bank conserves seeds from species of conservation concern in Asturias, as well as indicator species of natural habitats of interest.
The Atlantic Botanic Garden is committed to ensuring accessibility for all, please consult our recommended routes for those with reduced mobility and the TUR4ALL accessibility report.

The scientific mission of the Atlantic Botanic Garden is to contribute to the sustainability of the world’s natural resources, by studying and conserving the plants on which they depend on. To this end, the City of Gijón/Xixón has a collaboration agreement with the University of Oviedo to support a research group at the Garden. Here, you can meet the members of the research group and access their research lines and documents.
