Official Selection-Retueyos (shoots, sprouts in Asturian language) will include a selection of films directed by filmmakers who are still taking their first steps in their filmography with their first, second or third features in a competitive section that will serve to reinforce the commitment to young cinema that has been the FICX’s main goal for years.
Official Selection-Albar (Asturian term that refers to wood of great resistance and quality) will be the competition presenting a selection of films directed by already renowned filmmakers with a solid track record and a well-known career at international festivals.
Selección Oficial Tierres en Trance. In the last few years some of the most edgy and independent proposals away from conventionalisms within the contemporary art house cinema have come from Latin America, this is why the FICX opened in 2020 a section exclusively for films from this scope (that is, Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Venezuela, Chile, Ecuador, Peru, Paraguay, Bolivia, Uruguay, Cuba, Costa Rica, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Puerto Rico, Panama, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Spain and Portugal). The section name pays tribute to one of the great reformers of Latin cinema and founder of Cinema Novo in the 1960s, Brazilian filmmaker Glauber Rocha. .
Submissions are open for feature films (>45') and short films (<30'), to participate at these and other competitive and non-competitive sections of the Festival, except for the Asturian competition for which a specific call will be open soon.

The FICX - International Film Festival of Gijón/Xixón will celebrate its 59th edition from November 19 to 27 this year with a hybrid model offering both on site screenings at its usual venues in the town of Gijón along with a programme to enjoy online.
