From heavy industry to Industry 4.0
Historically Gijón has been one of the industrial capitals of the region, the maritime capital of Asturias and a magnet drawing people from all over the country to come and work there. The training of professionals in industry and maritime activity became well-established in the city as early as the 18th century.
The University of Oviedo has 400 years of history behind it, and now has one of its campuses in Gijón. Nautical studies are still important, and engineering studies stand out in an environment where business relations are strengthened, and R&D&I projects developed with multinationals based in the region, and with prestigious international research centres such as the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN).
The Capital of Health Area V
Gijón is the capital of one of the most densely populated health areas in Asturias (it includes two municipalities), where numerous primary care centres and hospitals are located. The Cabueñes University Hospital is the most important of the city’s three hospitals, which include the Hospital de Jove, which has been providing healthcare services since the beginning of the 19th century.
In addition to its work in the field of healthcare, and the scientific and professional prestige of the services it provides, Cabueñes University Hospital is one of the driving forces behind the “Margarita Salas Knowledge Mile”, where it is involved in projects focused on cooperation and the development of technology projects in the medical-healthcare field, through technological and research centres.

The companies on the Mile are knowledge-based, with a focus on technology and innovation, and in many cases the driving force comes from local people.
